What is a diabetes educator?

Diabetes educators are healthcare professionals who focus on helping people with or at risk for diabetes to achieve behavior change goals which will lead to better clinical outcomes and improved health status. Diabetes educators apply in-depth knowledge and skills in the biological and social sciences, communication, counseling, and education to provide self-management education/self-management training. Diabetes educators teach people with diabetes how to manage their diabetes to live their healthiest life by providing real-life guidance, coaching and support.

What is diabetes education?

Diabetes education, also known as diabetes self-management education/self-management training, is a collaborative process through which people with or at risk for diabetes gain the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary for self-care. Diabetes education aims to achieve optimal health status and quality of life and to reduce the need for costly health care.  Diabetes education focuses on seven self-care behaviors that are necessary for a healthy life:

  • Healthy eating
  • Being active
  • Monitoring
  • Taking medication
  • Problem solving
  • Healthy coping
  • Reducing risks
